Witcher 3 coming next year, likely for next-generation systems
The next installment in the Witcher series, and one of the first RPGs games of the next generation, has officially been announced. As revealed in the cover story of the March issue of Game Informer, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is scheduled to be released in 2014 on what developer CD Projekt RED describes as "all high-end platforms", in all likelihood meaning PC, the next Xbox, and possibly the PS4 (although the series has never appeared on a Sony system so far).
The game will draw inspiration from Skyrim, including features like a more open game world, and an absolutely massive one at that: thirty times the size the one found in the Witcher 2, and an impressive 20% larger than the vast swath of land in Skyrim. The game will be the debut of CD Projekt RED's new REDengine 3 technology.
Check out more details in the issue of Game Informer, and right here as they are revealed.

THQ Officially Disbands
After months of financial struggles, THQ annouced in a letter today to its employees today that the company is officially being dissolved. The company's game franchises, and the studios that make them, are being singled off and sold to various bidders from across the gaming world, including Ubisoft and Take-two, among others. In the letter obtained by Kotaku, the future of the Darksiders Francise and it's developer, Virgil Games, was left unkown. The document, written by CEO Brian Farrell and president Jason Rubin, stated that "We will make every effort to find appropriate buyers, if possible."
The document went to state that while most employees will likely be offered a new position under the new management, some positions might be eliminated. All employees of a company not included in the sale will have their employment eliminated entirely. THQ was first founded as THQ Inc in Calabasas Cal., in 1990 as a toy manufacturer. It acquired Brøderbund's video game devision in the late summer of 1990, and released it's first game the next year. Also in 1991, the company was acquired by Trinity Acquistion Corp. By 1994, the company had exited the toy business to focus exclusively on the video game market.
After introducing a new logo in 2000, THQ went on to produce many reconigible franchises through out the decade, including Red Faction, MX v. ATV, Saints Row, Company of Heroes, Darksiders, and Destroy All Humans! However, by the end of decade signs of hard times began to emerge as the global economy went to recession and several of the company's key products failed to create commercial success among negative reception from consumers and critics. In spring of 2011 company shares suffered a 26% drop after its game Homefront was timidly received, and several months later the company dropped its once-popular Red Faction series after negativity over the series latest entry. In the final weeks of 2012, the company announced it was entering chapter 11 bankruptcy.

From the 20th to the 26th of January, Best Buy is having a saucy (hey, its a fun adjective) 50% off sale on Sims 3 PC games online and in store. Not to be out done, Amazon is currently offering a discount on select expansion packs and most stuff packs. Notably, the recently released boxed version of the Monte Vista town is also included in the sale at both stores, meaning it can briefly be had for a lowly $9.99.
At Best Buy, the base game/expansion packs and stuff packs (except for the just-released 70's.80's, and 90's stuff pack) are priced at $19.99 and $9.99, respectively.
Meanwhile over at Amazon, downloads of older EPs are just $11.99, while disk versions of new EPS are also $19.99 except for Seasons due to an apparent inventory issue.
So, for any Sims players who haven't experienced the blissfulness that is Seasons, are looking to pick up a stuff pack, or who want to explore the newest town, Best Buy just might live up to it's name (and Amazon is awesome as usual).

EA, Maxis unleash Sims 3 announcements, vague details
On January 8th, the Sims team held a livestream that proved to be filled with quite a few announcements about new content coming to the Sims 3 this year.
After an initial 30-or-so minute delay from the expected 10 AM PST start time due to technical difficulties (hey, it can happen even to the best of us, right?), the Sims team went on a roll, dolling out details about not one, but two new expansions for the game as well as delivering some more-than-elusive hints about a stuff pack and yet another expansion coming out later this year.
First up, the good people Maxis showed off the nearly-here 70's, 80's, & 90's stuff pack that will be released on Jan. 22, giving us a look at the various retro fashion and vintage furnishings inspired by decades of memories past, complete with floating fireplace that hangs from the ceiling and reminds us of what people forty years ago thought the future would look like, a so-bad-its-good, Weird Science like ladies workout outfit, some grungy 90's fashion shown off on a Sim that looks uncomfortably similar to the late Kurt Cobain, and a rather cool sectional with a curved corner, among other things.
From there, the team moved onto the more juicy stuff, starting with the exciting, albeit expected, official unveiling of the much speculated University expansion that has been frequently rumored around the internet and occasionally listed on European retail sites over the past months. Officially tilted The Sims 3 University Life (you know, to differ it from the Sims 2: University, because repetition is so totally unlike the Sims franchise) EA's latest poorly kept secret got shown off quite a bit in the livestream. Coming with the expansion are many of the features players would expect and have gotten a glimpse at in various screenshots leaked recently, including a new college-based world that you can ship your young adult Sims off to--which appears to function similarly to World Adventures vacation worlds-- dormitories, college majors and, yes, even classes (education in college, who knew?), as well as a variety of new activities designed around the timeless stereotypes of bratty party animal college escapades ("juice" pong, anyone?). Look for a more detailed break-down of the University announcement in the coming days. University will be released on March 5th, the same day as SimCity, which also got a new teaser trailer thrown into the mix.
After giving some more in-depth detains about the upcoming stuff pack and pulling back the curtains on an expansion players have been anticipating for a while, Maxis decided to spice things up a bit. Out of the clear blue sky, simmers got a bit of a shock when with mention of Island Paradise, the next expansion after University Life. Schedule for a June release and as such still very much in development, visual details about the expansion where skimpy indeed, although the lone screenshot shown off had plenty of staying power as it boldly and proudly flaunted a revolutionary and remarkable new feature for the Sims series: a boat! (to non-Sims-players, that may sound a bit underwhelming, but trust us, its actually pretty awesome). Yes, for the first time in the series, Island Paradise feature useable boats, and better yet, not just mundane commuter boats, but instead full-fledged houseboats for Sims to live and travel on and that, according to the Sims Team, will even be creatable by players.
The hosts seemed pretty adamant that houseboats will be fully customizable by players, although details about just how this will work remain uncertain (our bets are on pre-made exterior shells with interiors useable in build/buy mode similar to the highrises of Late Night, but at this point its anyone's guess). Of course, Island Paradise will contain an actual island world consisting of several different land masses that together will presumably constitute some rendition of a utopia, as well as the ability for Sims to snorkel and scuba-dive underwater (which could possibly just be a rabbit-hole, however since the host seemed to act like this was a major feature, hopefully it will be something more). In the expansion, players will also be able to not only visit but also run and manage their very own island resort ( a welcome bit of Open For Business, oolala!).
Continuing on the bombardment, the host, with sincere apologies to his apparently disgruntled PR people off-screen (oh Ryan Vaughan, you're such a transparent salesman its cute), went on to unveil the third expansion for this year, although stopping short of anything but a vague description that it will allow Sims to travel into the future. No details about how this mechanic will work, or whether or not it will seem as out of place in the game as it sounds, but hopefully when its released later this year it will prove to be good enough to justify being another expansion that isn't the Sims 3 variation of Open For Business that so many players in the game's forums are vocally waiting for. There was also announcement of a stuff pack for this fall that will revolve around iconic themes, costumes and sets (whatever that means, simply new themes of furnishings, perhaps?).
And so, there you have it! Since Maxis took a new approach and decided to unveil new expansions still early in development and a long way from release, details about much of the content were skimpy, but more info is sure to spill out over the coming months. Particularly, the Sims Team has scheduled another livestream for Feb. 14th, that can reasonably be expected to show off some more of University Life and possibly Island Paradise. Stay tuned as Digitdan covers any other details as they are released!

Connecticut Town Cancels Game-Destroying
Community leaders in the town of Southington, Conn. have announced cancellation of a planned event involving the collection and destruction of video games and other media.
As spokesperson in the group's press conference held yesterday morning explained to tech site Polygon, the group feels they have succeeded in their primary task of encouraging an increased discussion about violent video games and media, leading them to feel the physical event is now unnecessary.
"We succeeded in our program. Our mission was to create strong awareness in Southington for parents and families and citizens and children. And we accomplished that," spokesperson Dick Fortunato said in a conversation with Polygon.
"Our other objective was to promote discussion of violent video games and media with children and with the families at the home. And we've accomplished that in spades. So we deemed it became unnecessary to have the physical return on Saturday of violent games. Also because it would create an unnecessary amount of logistical details for us."
The event, planned for January 12th, would have had volunteers at the Southington Drive-in who would accept any video games, CDs, or DVDs that parents or children wished to rid of. According to the group's plans, the discs would then have been destroyed, and families particapting in the event would have recieved gift cards to local attractions and businesses.
The event was conceived just weeks after the December 14th school massacre in Newtown Conn., approximately 35-miles to the north, that left 20 children and six adults dead.
In addition to a larger movement of renewed discussion regarding national gun laws, video games have seen increased criticism and discourse about their possible influences on violent acts in the wake of the Newtown tragedy. Also on the morning of January 9, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said on national television that video games should be examined along side increased discussion about mental illness in an effort to reduce violence, while Vice President Joe Biden plans to meet with video game industry leaders to discuss violent games as part of a task force aimed at examining the role of violent media in mass shootings.
